Towards an Intelligent and Satellite-Integrated SD-WAN: ;A High-Performance and Availability-Aware Approach

Abstract

Software-Defined Wide Area Networks (SD-WANs) offer significant benefits in terms of security, flexibility, and cost-efficiency. However, they still face critical challenges in ensuring high availability and providing guaranteed quality of service. ; ; This PhD research aims to improve the resilience and awareness of SD-WAN systems, particularly in the face of failures and dynamic network conditions. The proposed approach addresses this goal on multiple fronts: (i) developing an analytical model for SD-WAN availability assessment, (ii) designing a decentralized control plane architecture, (iii) implementing ad hoc integrations with heterogeneous access network technologies (e.g., satellite-based), and (iv) devising novel traffic engineering algorithms to enhance performance guarantees. ; ; In parallel, a modular SD-WAN framework will be developed to support the deployment and experimental validation of the proposed solutions.
