Principles, applications, and future of Artificial Intelligence in Oral Pathology
Oral Pathology is that branch of Dentistry that studies the clinical, anatomic-pathological, and therapeutic aspects of diseases affecting the mucosa and soft tissues of the oral cavity. In this field, images play a fundamental role in documenting pre-existing conditions, monitoring the progression of pathological conditions over time, and assessing the effectiveness of treatments. ; Images provide an accurate and objective visual record that can be used for diagnostic purposes, treatment planning, communication with other healthcare professionals, and even medico-legal purposes. Often, many oral lesions are misdiagnosed by clinicians due to the wide variety of lesions that can appear in the oral cavity. ; This can sometimes lead to a delayed diagnosis of potentially malignant or cancerous lesions. ; My PhD project aims to create a consultation tool for colleagues and support for clinical decision-making in the field of oral medicine. In particular, through the collection of clinical photographs taken before and subsequent scans of oral lesions, captured with 3D scanners, the artificial intelligence software (LLaVa - 1.6 model) will be able to evaluate the extent of the lesion and suggest possible developments of the lesion and therapies used in previous cases learned during the training phase. ;
