Toward Adaptive Power and Energy System Planning: Integrating Market Design, Distributed Control and Climate Variability

Abstract

This PhD research proposes the development of advanced models for electricity systems that can address the growing need for flexibility, decentralization, and climate resilience. As energy systems transition toward higher shares of variable renewable energy, new challenges emerge in balancing supply and demand across multiple temporal and spatial scales. My PhD research aims to explore how decentralized decision-making, market mechanisms, and multi-objective optimization can be combined to support both short-term operational flexibility and long-term planning. ; ; Particular attention is given to the integration of climate-informed dynamics, stakeholder diversity, and the economic mechanisms of electricity markets, including pricing signals, capacity expansion incentives, and flexibility procurement in a short and long-term perspective. The ultimate goal is to contribute new modeling tools and decision-support methods for the design and operation of future-proof energy systems.
